What is wellbeing?

Wellbeing is about feeling good and doing (or functioning) well.

Feeling good

Someone who has a positive experience in their life has feelings of:

  • happiness
  • contentment
  • enjoyment
  • curiosity
  • engagement

Functioning well

Experiencing positive relationships, having some control over one’s life and having a sense of purpose are all important attributes of wellbeing.

Wellbeing is important for everyone – including you.

Building wellbeing into your daily life

There are various ideas for different ways that you can build the ways to wellbeing into your daily life:

Make a pledge to do doing something positive for your own wellbeing. Even small things can enhance your wellbeing, whether it’s getting out and about, doing a good deed, or learning to do something new.

Research

The first study in the UK to measure wellbeing estimated that only 14% of the population has a high level of wellbeing, referred to as flourishing. A whole range of factors determine an individual’s level of personal wellbeing but the things we do and the way we think can have the greatest impact.

In the ‘Living in Warwickshire’ survey (2014) (which had almost 7,500 responses), whilst 75% of respondents reported their overall health as being good, the responses for mental wellbeing were more mixed.

Mental health and wellbeing support and services

Your mental health and wellbeing is really important and can be improved. If you are struggling to cope or feeling low, don’t wait for things to get too much.

There are a range of mental health and wellbeing services and support available across Warwickshire that can help you to improve your wellbeing and support you during difficult times.
