Bikeability: Cycle training for primary, secondary and special schools
Bikeability cycle training is the government's national cycle training programme, and equips children and young people with the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to cycle safely.
In Warwickshire, Bikeability training for schools is funded by the Bikeability Trust and delivered by three training providers on behalf of Warwickshire County Council. Our current training providers are Outspoken Training, North Warwickshire Active School Sports Partnership and Harris School Sports Partnership.
The following funded courses are available to Warwickshire schools:
Balance: Balance bike training to develop cycle handling and awareness skills and build confidence. This course is generally aimed at 4 – 7-year-olds.
Learn to Ride: This training is suitable for all ages, and for those who can balance but can’t pedal.
Level 1: Off-road cycle training to help children and young people learn to cycle in a traffic-free environment. Level 1 covers:
- Maintenance
- Control
- Pedalling
- Awareness of surroundings
Level 2: On-road cycle training on residential roads. Level 2 covers:
- Starting and stopping
- Passing stationary vehicles
- Understanding the road
- Negotiating the road
- Sharing the road
Level 3: On road cycle training in more complex traffic and road environments. Level 3 covers:
- Identifying the best riding position
- Riding alongside other cyclists
- Riding on more complex roads
- Negotiating more complex roads
- Responding confidently in different situations

Bikeability: cycle training for special schools
Bikeability training for special schools is funded by the Bikeability Trust and delivered by training providers on behalf of Warwickshire County Council.
Our training providers can provide adapted sessions, smaller group sessions, or a 1 to 1 session to meet the needs of your students.
Warwickshire County Council have an adaptive fleet bike that can be loaned to students to access training.

Holiday courses
Fully funded school holiday cycle training courses for children and young people are offered throughout the year at a variety of venues across the county.

Fleet cycles
Warwickshire County Council have a fleet of cycles, and helmets which for loan. We can arrange for single cycles, several cycles or the whole fleet to be loaned to a school or venue ready for children who do not have access to their own roadworthy cycle and helmet.
Warwickshire County Council also has access to an adaptive cycle for children who would benefit from using it.
