We are committed to improving provision for cycling as part of our work to address the climate emergency, improve air quality, reduce congestion and improve health.
We have ambitious plans to improve and extend the networks of cycle routes in and around Warwickshire’s towns. We are doing this so that more people will choose to cycle for everyday journeys, such as to work and school.
New cycle routes
We are embarking on a cycling infrastructure development programme which will result in a significant number of new or improved routes being constructed over the next few years. These will provide missing links in our cycle networks or upgrade the quality of existing routes making it easier and safer for people to cycle.
We have committed £6.75m to build cycle routes which will connect Kenilworth to Leamington Spa, Nuneaton to Bedworth, Bedworth to Coventry and provide a key part of a route which will connect Nuneaton to Hinckley. In addition, we are developing cycle routes as part of wider highway schemes in locations including A3400 Birmingham Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, A47 Hinckley Road Nuneaton and at Stanks Island / Birmingham Road, Warwick. Funding sources for these schemes include Government Pinch Point and Growth Deal Funds as well as the County Council.
A further £2.2m package of cycle schemes which includes cycle routes on Coventry Road in Warwick, Stratford Road in Warwick and Alcester Road in Stratford-upon-Avon, is being delivered with the support of a £1.9m grant from the Government’s Getting Building Fund through Coventry and Warwickshire LEP.
We have been awarded £0.829m from Tranche 2 of the Government’s Active Travel Fund towards the Long Shoot cycle route in Nuneaton (part of the Hinckley – Nuneaton route) and the northern section of the Rugby Gateway to town centre cycle route in Rugby.
We also work to secure provision of new cycling infrastructure to connect new development to the local cycling network, such as in south Warwick where new cycle will serve the developments being built in the vicinity of Europa Way corridor.
