This needs assessment looking at the health and well-being needs of school-aged children (5-19 years old) was updated in November 2018. It outlines relevant national policies and programmes and provides a Warwickshire context for those commissioning and providing services for school-aged children in the county. It also includes a review of the School Health & Wellbeing Service.
In 2018, there were 238 State-funded schools in Warwickshire: 35 secondary schools, 192 primary schools and 11 special schools, with just over 82,000 children and young people attending these schools. Of these children, 13.1% had Special Educational Needs and 9.6% spoke a language other than English as their first language. The needs assessment highlights variation within Warwickshire with regards to demographics, educational attainment, health-related behaviour and health outcomes. It also provides an overview of those children and young people who are classed as vulnerable and may have different health and wellbeing needs.
The role of the School Health & Wellbeing Service is essential. The service is in an ideal position to support children and young people in achieving positive health and wellbeing outcomes and to work in partnership with schools, parents/carers and other key professionals. Based on the information provided within this report and the range of detailed evaluations and consultation on the current service key recommendations are identified for future service commissioning.
