It is a requirement to wear face coverings on public transport and in shops, supermarkets and other enclosed public spaces. However, certain people are exempt from wearing a face covering, the exemptions include, but are not limited to:

  • anyone under the age of 11
  • people with disabilities
  • people with health conditions such as breathing difficulties, mental health conditions or autism.

Some people who are exempt from wearing a face covering may feel more comfortable showing something that says they do not have to wear a face covering. This could be in the form of an exemption card, badge or even a home-made sign. This is a personal choice and is not necessary in law.
