As parents, it is essential to ensure the safety of our children in our homes. Fires can pose significant risks, but with the right precautions, we can reduce the likelihood of incidents and protect our families. To help keep your family safe:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them regularly.
  • Create a fire escape plan with your family and practice it regularly.
    • Make sure everyone knows how to escape in the event of a fire and where to meet outside.
  • Teach your children about the dangers of fire and how to respond if they encounter one.
    • Teach them to never play with matches, lighters, or any fire-starting devices.
  • Keep all exits, including doors and windows, clear of clutter or obstructions.
    • This ensures easy and quick evacuation in case of a fire.
  • Teach your family the ‘Stop, Drop, and Roll’ technique.
    • Emphasize the importance of covering their face and calling for help.
  • Be aware of common kitchen hazards.
    • Never leave cooking unattended, especially when there are children around.
    • Keep kitchen appliances, such as kettles or toasters, away from the edge of countertops to avoid spills or contact with flammable materials.
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
    • Socket extenders/extension leads should only ever be attached to the wall plug, not to one another.
    • Unplug chargers, appliances, and electronics when not in use and check electronics for signs of wear and damage.
  • Keep furniture, curtains, and other flammable materials at a safe distance from heaters and radiators.
    • It's also essential to turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Store matches and lighters safely, securely and out of reach and sight of children.
  • Install fireguards and safety gates to protect children from fires, stoves, or hazardous rooms such as the kitchen.

We offer a fire setting intervention scheme for children and young people under 18 who have shown an interest in fire or displayed fire setting behaviour. This educational program aims to raise awareness about the dangers of fire, support informed decision-making, and provide fire safety advice to parents and carers. If you are concerned about your child’s behaviour and would like to learn more or make a referral, you can find out more about fire setting intervention.
