Medical oxygen users
Oxygen therapy has a critical role in medical care for people at home, but the oxygen cylinders need to be used safely:
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation, use, and maintenance of the oxygen concentrator.
- Make sure that anyone receiving or providing oxygen therapy at home knows all about the safe use, storage, and possible risks associated with oxygen.
- Make sure that the oxygen is placed in a well-ventilated area to prevent the accumulation of oxygen-enriched air.
- Test the oxygen levels regularly using appropriate gas-detector equipment.
- Never smoke or have open flames (e.g. candles) in the same area as the oxygen.
- it supports combustion and can accelerate fire incidents.
- Take care of the electrical equipment such as concentrators or nebulizers by regularly removing dust or other flammable materials from the area.
- Regularly check electrical cords, plugs and sockets for damage and avoid using extension leads or overloaded electrical outlets.
- Store oxygen cylinders in a well-ventilated area away from flammable materials (e.g. oils, greases and aerosol cans) ignition sources, electrical devices or in locations prone to high temperatures.
- Avoid dropping or mishandling the cylinders, as this can cause damage to the valves or regulators.
- Let us know that oxygen therapy is being used in your home.
- We will store the information on the location and number of cylinders for use in an emergency and can provide any additional guidance needed.
- We can also carry out a Safe and Well visit to check the safety in your home.
