Neurodevelopmental conditions are a group of conditions which are affected by the way the brain develops in a person. This may be a result of genetic or environmental factors or a combination of both. They commonly appear in childhood. They are lifelong conditions.

The main neurodevelopmental conditions are:

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or autism spectrum condition (ASC)
  • Dyspraxia (also referred to as Developmental Co-ordination Disorder or DCD)
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • Specific Learning Disorders (such as Dyslexia and Dyscalculia)
  • Some speech-sound or fluency disorders, such as stuttering
  • Learning disabilities

Some neurodevelopmental conditions are assessed and diagnosed through a specialist neurodevelopmental service. Others, such as specific learning disorders, may be assessed through your child’s nursery, school or other educational setting.

If you have concerns regarding your pre-school child, first steps would be to speak with your health visitor, your child’s childcare setting or your GP.

If your child is school-age or above, speak to your child’s class teacher, the school special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and/or your GP.

If you are an adult, speak to your GP.
