Areas for Staff Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Teachers to consider their knowledge in relation to the following, to identify areas for continuing professional development:
- Are aware of the sensory needs of young people in their classes.
- Have knowledge about the sensory, physical and medical needs of young people in their classes and the implications for learning
- Feel confident in meeting the sensory needs of the young people in their class
- Are familiar with the Individual Healthcare plans of the children they teach and know what to do if there is a concern
- Are aware of the impact the acoustics in the classroom have on the learning of young people with hearing impairment and have adapted the classroom so that the physical layout and sensory environment is not a barrier to learning
- Give children alternative strategies to record if required
- Give the young people in their classes enough time to respond.
- Can modify their responses to individual children on the basis of need.
- Work as part of a team with any teaching assistants they have in their classroom.
- Have access to CPD opportunities and other support regarding meeting the needs of young people with hearing impairment.
- Teachers are able to discuss sensory concerns with the SENCo and/or the senior leadership team when required.
