Proposed works

These works form part of the Historic Bridge Maintenance Programme.

The historic bridge maintenance works are expected to include:

  • Extensive stone repair and replacement of missing and eroded bricks and stone blocks on the cutwaters, spandrel walls and arches.

Missing and eroded bricks on the bridge

  • Non-compliant brickwork to be replaced with the appropriate stonework authorised by Historic England.
  • Scour defects below the river level to the foundations of each pier.

Construction works are envisaged to require two phases of repairs.

Phase 1

  • Preliminary works, running from August to November 2020 subject to consents associated with the proposed works and weather experienced. Construction works will address defects in the external elevations upstream and cutwaters, where readily accessible, working predominantly from the adjacent floodplain and field on the southeastern corner. Scour defects below the water level are to be repaired.
  • NB Additional works to repair both the parapet and cutwater damaged from a road traffic collision on Thursday 23 July are to be included in this first phase of delivery.

Defects in the external elevations and cutwaters

  • All attempts are being made at this time to devise works that will not require significant traffic management nor road closure for this phase of operation.

Phase 2

  • A major stone restoration programme to be scheduled for spring/summer 2021-22. Where structural repairs to the masonry arches are required, limiting traffic management may be unavoidable but at present undetermined. The start date and duration of phase 2 will be determined on completion of phase 1, subject to further assessment.

These works will maintain the highway retaining bridge function for both pedestrians and vehicular traffic travelling along the B4085 Honeybourne Road, crossing the River Avon, by addressing known defects that are at risk to variable water levels during flood events. The works will increase both the service life of the structure and safeguard this valuable and historic structure in line with its ancient monument and listed building status.
