Christmas giving

Everyone deserves some kindness in their lives, it is free to give but the value is immeasurable to recipients.

As we enter the festive period, a traditional time for giving, Warwickshire County Council is urging people to think about kindness and how they can give this to others and themselves.

With this in mind, a kindness advent calendar has opened its doors at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/adventcalendar and on the council's social media platforms Twitter, Facebook and Instagram – follow BestWarwickshire

Every day during the advent period a random act of kindness will be shared along with some signposting to support available in Warwickshire to offer people a little extra help at this time.

Each week in December will feature a theme, looking at importance of giving, caring, community, and mental and physical wellbeing.

Leader of Warwickshire County Council, Councillor Izzi Seccombe said: “Over recent months Warwickshire’s residents and communities have shown kindness in many ways and as an organisation we recognise how important this has been in helping us all navigate the challenges of the recent months. Acts of kindness are very often captured in the small gestures that can make a big difference to someone’s day.

“As we enter the Christmas period we want the kindness to continue and through our advent calendar and social media channels we will be sharing some simple messages of kindness, ways to share good feeling and look after ourselves and each other.”

Week one of the advent calendar focused on the importance of giving:

  • The launch of Warwickshire timebanking means it’s never been easier to give to your community. Timebanks relay on the goodwill of people, organisations and communities to work.
  • Giving your time to check in on a loved one – send a text, give them a call, or write them a letter – you never know how much it could mean to them.
  • Giving your time to volunteer or help someone who may be isolated or lonely. This can have a hugely positive effect on your own and someone else’s wellbeing.
  • Giving can be as simple as sharing a smile, telling a joke and asking someone if they are okay – and really listening to their response. Kindness benefits us all it’s free to give and invaluable to receive.
