Pupils at Brownsover Community School in Rugby, Warwickshire, were treated to a tasty roast with all the trimmings on Wednesday (14th November) – national Roast Dinner Day - in celebration of the Soil Association’s ‘Food for Life’ scheme and the Prince of Wales’ 70th birthday.
The school, which has its meals provided by Warwickshire-based school caterers Educaterers, hold a Gold Award from the Soil Association’s ‘Food for Life’ scheme, in recognition of the fantastic work they do to provide healthy school meals, great lunchtimes and food education.
At Wednesday’s special lunch ~ which included options of roast sliced British beef served with Yorkshire pudding and gravy or vegetarian sausage toad in the hole ~ the pupils were joined by staff from Educaterers and from Lower Hurst Farm in Derbyshire, who supply the catering company with organic beef, as well as Ian Nutt, Head of Programmes Development for ‘Food for Life’.
Lower Hurst Farm have recently been awarded ‘Supplier Scheme Champion 2018’ by Food for Life and took the opportunity to celebrate with pupils and with Educaterers, who helped them win the title. Lower Hurst Farm’s customers include some 700,000 school children plus hospitals and universities.
Educaterers hold the ‘Food for Life Served Here’ Silver Catering Mark in recognition of the fact that their school catering teams serve local, fresh food made with quality ingredients, prepared and served in a way that takes school pupils’ health and well-being seriously.

The Food for Life scheme started in schools – and over 10,000 schools now serve food to ‘Food for Life Served Here’ standards – but you will also find Food for Life meals served in many other places including universities, colleges, early years settings, hospitals and care homes. Over 1.7 million Food for Life meals are served a day all around the UK.
