With today (Tuesday 5th February) being Chinese New Year, children in Warwickshire got the opportunity to celebrate the occasion during their school lunch time ~ with a special lunch menu from school caterers, Educaterers.
The lunch menu, which was put together especially for pupils to mark Chinese New Year, was served up at Warwickshire primary schools by Educaterers school catering teams – including at Whitnash Primary School (pictured), where there were fortune cookies on offer and the older children were encouraged to try using chopsticks!
The menu featured some delicious options including sweet and sour chicken with rice or a vegetarian option of Chinese style Quorn with noodles, both accompanied by garden peas or carrot and Mandarin orange salad, followed by a pudding of sticky pineapple cake or a fresh fruit salad.
Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar – and this year is the Year of the Pig.
Terry Tredget, Director of Educaterers, said: “We wanted to help the children celebrate Chinese New Year in their schools with this special menu and give them a bit of a change from their usual lunch time.
“We work closely with our school catering teams to come up with novel ways to get their school children engaged at lunch times and enjoying an assortment of freshly prepared foods throughout the year, so our appreciation goes as always to our staff, who are our greatest asset.”
Educaterers take care to use locally sourced ingredients including British Red Tractor chicken and free range eggs, and hold the Soil Association’s Food for Life Silver Catering Mark.
Primary, junior and infant schools using the Educaterers service have special menus throughout the year for special occasions such as St George’s Day and Christmas, and last year also celebrated the Royal Wedding and the World Cup.
Educaterers provide over 120,000 meals every week to over 200 schools across Warwickshire, Birmingham and Oxfordshire. For more information visit www.educaterers.co.uk.
