Essential pre-ride checks
POWDER is a handy acronym used by motorcyclists to remember essential pre-ride checks. It stands for Petrol, Oil, Water, Damage/Drive, Electrics, Rubber. Each letter represents a specific aspect of the bike that should be inspected before setting out on a ride:
P - Petrol (Fuel)
- Check the fuel level to ensure you have enough for your journey.
- Inspect for any leaks in the fuel system.
- Ensure the fuel tap (if your bike has one) is set to the correct position.
O - Oil
- Check the engine oil level using the dipstick or sight glass and top up if necessary.
- Inspect for any oil leaks around the engine, gearbox, or oil cooler.
- Make sure that the oil change is within the recommended interval.
W - Water (Coolant)
- Check the coolant level in the radiator or coolant reservoir if your bike is liquid-cooled.
- Inspect for leaks in the cooling system.
- For air-cooled bikes, ensure there are no obstructions to airflow over the engine.
D - Damage/Drive
- Damage: Walk around the bike and look for any visible signs of damage or wear. Check for loose bolts, cracks, or anything unusual.
- Drive: Inspect the chain (or belt/shaft if applicable) for proper tension, lubrication, and wear. Ensure the sprockets are in good condition.
E - Electrics
- Test all lights, including headlights, brake lights, indicators, and the horn, to ensure they are functioning correctly.
- Check the battery condition and make sure the electrical connections are secure.
- Verify the operation of the ignition system and switches.
R - Rubber
- Inspect the tires for correct pressure, adequate tread depth, and any signs of damage like cuts or bulges.
- Check the condition of other rubber components like hoses, seals, and grips.
By following the POWDER checklist, you can help ensure your motorcycle is in good working order before each ride, reducing the risk of breakdowns or accidents.
