Trees on private property

We are not responsible for trees we do not own. We do not take action on trees that are on private land and we are not liable for damage caused by trees which we do not own. As a highway authority, we do have powers to deal with trees that are on land next to the road and are a risk to road users. We would, where appropriate, seek to notify the landowner in the first instance. Problems relating to trees and hedges on private land are usually civil matters. This is not something enforced by local authorities.

Your local council may be able to help with concerns about a neighbour’s tree close to your own property - especially if it concerns high conifer hedges. Otherwise, you should seek your own advice.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPO) and conservation areas

Your local council's planning department administer TPOs.
