What it looks like
A three reed structure incorporates specially selected river pebbles as the seating elements.
What it's about
Inspiration for ‘Down by the River’ was drawn from water, movement, drama and spectacle. The locality, its history, connections to theatre, history and the natural environment of the river Leam provided materials and inspiration for the design. The project connects green and urban space, community voice and identity. The site location, close to the river, Jephson gardens and the Spa Centre provides additional interest.
This area of Leamington is popular for leisure time but also for people making daily journeys into the town centre. Leamington has a rich history of public art and architecture which offer cultural reference points, connecting people to place.
The piece invites exploration and conversation as well as helping to create a more interesting environment and encourages reflection about what is unique to the town.
How it was made
The piece was made using Corten steel, rolled and shaped to ensure the final piece retained integrity with the original design, but is also robust and is suitable for life in the public realm.
How the artist describes it
Participating in the project has offered an opportunity to develop large scale functional work and allowed exploration of new materials and working practices within Warwickshire.
What will happen next
‘Down by the River’ has already generated interest from the local creative and arts sector, providing a focal point for arts and cultural developments in the town.
