Vows and promises

The format of a civil ceremony is fairly standard. There are minimum vows (the declaratory and contracting words) that must be included and cannot be altered but there is still scope to personalise the ceremony with readings and ring promises to make sure your day is perfect for you.

You will receive the ‘Your Ceremony’ booklet once you have both given legal notice. This contains the declaratory and contracting words, optional ring promises and suggested readings.

You may include up to three readings in your ceremony. They must be approved by the registration office before your ceremony and must not contain any religious connotations.
