Areas for staff Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Teachers to consider their knowledge in relation to the following, to identify areas for continuing professional development:
Teachers:
- Understand their roles and responsibilities regarding SEND.
- Understand that all young people are different and learn at different rates.
- Understand the range of learning needs within the classroom.
- Have high expectations of each member of their class.
- Feel confident in meeting the learning needs of the young people in their class.
- Have an understanding of how the learning needs of young people can influence their behaviour and motivation.
- Have knowledge of risk factors associated with learning progress.
- Know how to create an effective teaching environment conductive to learning.
- Use a range of different classroom resources to support my teaching, for example, visual cues, task management/sequencing boards, writing frames, prompt sheets etc.
- Have a visual timetable in the classroom that is accessible to all young people in their class and referred to on a daily basis.
- Understand the Instructional Hierarchy and how to apply it to their planning and teaching.
- Have a working vocabulary wall in the classroom which is regularly referred to.
- Know how to reduce the demands of the curriculum in lessons.
- Can recognise early signs of young people at risk of underachieving.
- Have awareness of the effect of their own behaviour on the class.
- Can modify their responses to young people on the basis of their individual need.
- Work as part of a team with any teaching assistants and staff in their classrooms.
- Discuss learning concerns with the SENCo when required.
- Have access to CPD opportunities to increase skill and knowledge to support curriculum access, interventions, other support to meet learning and SEND needs.
