Management of our own estate

Our Objective – To improve the management for biodiversity of land and buildings owned by us.

Natural Choice White Paper:

a) Reconnect people with nature to:

  • Create a new ‘Local Green Areas’ designation to protect locally valued green areas;
  • Help local authorities use their duties and powers on public health, Public Heath England will publish practical evidence about improving health including access to a good natural environment;
  • Enable voluntary activity to improve wildlife habitats: Muck In4Life campaign;
  • Simplify and streamline the process for recording and making changes to PROWs, based on Natural England’s working group on unrecorded rights of way;
  • £560 million Local Sustainable Transport Fund will help encourage walking and cycling, improve public transport and make better connection between different forms of sustainable transport.

b) Will work with its transport agencies and key delivery partners to contribute to the creation of coherent and resilient ecological networks.

c) Restoration of Ancient Woodland sites

d) Safeguarding soils and explore how soil degradation can affect flood mitigation, carbon storage and nutrient cycling.

e) Reduce peat use to zero by 2030; public sector by 2015.

f) National Wildlife Garden of the Year award for homes, Schools and communities.
