Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are used in electronics, toys, wireless headphones, handheld power tools, small and large appliances, electric vehicles and electrical energy storage systems.

Understanding and mitigating the potential fire hazards associated with these is essential:

  • Only purchase lithium-ion batteries from reputable manufacturers and authorized retailers.
    • Others may not meet safety standards and could pose a higher risk of fire.
  • Use the batteries recommended by the manufacturer for a particular device.
    • Avoid mixing and matching batteries from different devices.
  • Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place to minimize the risk of overheating.
    • Ideally using appropriate battery cases or sleeves where possible.
  • Prevent overcharging by removing batteries from charging once they reach their full capacity.
    • Don’t leave batteries connected to chargers unattended for extended periods, especially overnight.
  • Use chargers specifically designed for lithium-ion batteries and recommended by the battery manufacturer.
    • Others may not have the necessary safety features to prevent overcharging or short circuits.
  • Place batteries on non-flammable surfaces when charging, such as metal or ceramic plates.
    • Never charge them on flammable materials like beds, sofas, or carpets.
  • Regularly inspect lithium-ion batteries for any signs of damage, including bulging, leaking, or frayed wires.
    • If there is any damage, stop using it and dispose of it safely according to proper recycling guidelines.
  • Look out for any warning signs from the battery, such as excessive heat, smoke, or a swollen appearance.
    • If you notice any, stop using it and seek professional assistance.
  • Dispose of old, damaged, or unused lithium-ion batteries at designated recycling points or battery recycling facilities.
    • Do not include them in regular household waste.
  • When transporting devices with lithium-ion batteries, especially in large quantities, follow the relevant transportation regulations and guidelines.
