Legal - Ameera

Ameera case study graduate

My background

After completing a degree in Political Science and Philosophy, I did the Teach First Leadership Development Programme followed by a Graduate Diploma in Law at the University of Law. Following that I then worked in private practice as a Litigation Support Lawyer prior to completing the Legal Practice Course.

Why Warwickshire

Working at Warwickshire County Council means you are presented with opportunities every day to make a difference, as part of the local government that is so central to the community. The Council is progressive in its attitude and adapts its approach to its work and services to meet current day consciousness.

More broadly, in local government there is a shared ethos and a pull in the same direction to achieve a collective goal. Clients tend to be knowledgeable, professional clients who have their own deadlines and time constraints which helps to see the bigger picture and that you are assisting in achieving a larger overall goal.

In advance of applying for a training contact with Warwickshire County Council I had heard lots of positive things about the Legal Services department, their work, and the awards they have won.

Opportunities

The training contract’s work is so varied. You can be working on a planning appeal one day and a civil injunction the next. The experiences are challenging and exciting: I go to planning and licensing committees, attend court and advocate, work on large scale development agreements, advise on fraud matters.

I am also given lots of training and development options, attending interesting conferences, and go on training events regularly.

The people who I’ve worked with and been trained by are so friendly and supportive which makes it a really positive environment to be in. I’ve been able to draft court documents, undertake complex research tasks, observe lots of advocacy as well as conduct my own.

Was it a good decision

Absolutely. At Warwickshire I have been able to work a range of matters I would not have had the opportunity to work on otherwise. I work with great clients on important matters and the development given to me by Warwickshire Legal Services has been excellent.
