Introduction

This scheme began in 2016 as the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Programme. Warwickshire County and District and Borough Councils resettled 36 families through this scheme to four areas of Warwickshire: Rugby, Nuneaton, Stratford and Warwick District.

In 2019 the government announced a new global scheme, the UK Resettlement Scheme. This is open to refugees fleeing conflict worldwide. To qualify, people need to have been recognised as a refugee by UNHCR and need to meet certain criteria demonstrating vulnerability.

It is a planned, managed and fully funded scheme. Resettlement and integration support is funded over a 5 year period. An established WCC team have been supporting families in Warwickshire for 5 years. Families are given indefinite leave to remain and have recourse to public funds.

Number of families resettled/ expected in Warwickshire: Warwickshire Councils pledged to accept 23-27 families through this scheme over a 4 year period.
