Multi-phase portable traffic signals

To request authorisation for use of multi-phase portable traffic signals within the county please download and complete our application form.

To complete the form you must have a working knowledge of the following:

  • safety at street works and road works – a code of practice (red book)
  • traffic signs chapter 8
  • an introduction to the use of portable vehicular signals (pink book)
  • traffic signs regulations and general directions 2002

If all relevant information has been submitted and no site visits are required by the authority, no authorisation charge will be incurred by the contractor.

Should the information submitted be insufficient, a standard charge of £500 will be made for the work associated with the authorisation of multi-phase portable traffic signals. The fee covers the following work carried out by this department:

  • initial site visit to ensure signals are feasible and assess siting of the signal heads
  • consultation with agent authorities
  • check plan(s) to ensure that working area is kept to a minimum
  • check all red timings and sequence of lights
  • check traffic management proposals
  • establish traffic flow at the site
  • make recommendations on timings/traffic management
  • site visit(s) during the works if required

We have a fixed standard charge instead of a variable charge. This ensures contractors are aware of the actual cost when requesting the authorisation of temporary signals. It is accepted that on some occasions the authority will make a loss and on others a profit.
