Staff Knowledge and Understanding
Teachers to consider their knowledge in relation to the following to identify areas for continuing professional development:
- The language expectations for young people in their class(es) and how young people’s language develops
- The links between language and literacy development, e.g. vocabulary and reading comprehension
- Skills in developing the language skills of the young people in their class.
- Adapting language so it is not a barrier to learning
- Awareness of the learning hierarchy and how to apply it to planning and teaching
- Awareness of the communication chain and how it relates to young people in their class
- The use of visuals to support communication
- Knowledge of the 3 tiers of vocabulary
- The use of alternative strategies to communicate
- Knowledge of how to access Widgit Communicate in Print in school and be able to produce resources.
