Designated leadership / SENCo
There is a designated lead for supporting sensory needs in school who is responsible for:
- Providing support and guidance to all staff around sensory needs
- Being one point of contact for external support services, e.g. Integrated Disability Service Hearing Team, health professionals and providers of specialist equipment
- Ensuring the maintenance and effective use of specialist equipment, ICT and other resources
- Ensuring that the One Page Profile/Pen Portrait is co-produced with the young person and their family, that clearly communicates key information to staff teams regarding the young person’s views and what the young person feels works best for them in the learning environment
- Engaging parents in supporting young people’s sensory needs
- Maintaining awareness of relevant research and policy updates in this area
- Identifying the potential risk factors within the vulnerable groups in school
- Consideration is given to exam arrangements, for example pupils may need access to a live voice with visual access to lip reading cues when information is required to be listened to
- Liaising with the governing body regarding sensory needs
- Ensuring that care plans are in place and reviewed when necessary
