Housing

Suitable housing is important to someone with a disability. The quality of the property, location, level of support, and security of tenancy are important aspects to take into consideration when thinking about what housing options may be best for you.

The National Development Team for Inclusion offer their housing top tips for young people with SEND who are looking for housing. The tips cover what kind of place you want to live in, where you would like to live, considering adaptations that a property may need, putting your name on the housing register to be considered for social or local authority housing, understanding tenancy agreements and more.

The Council for Disabled Children have produced ‘No place like home – a housing and support guide’ to help people with learning disabilities find a housing choice right for them. The booklet covers:

  • rental options
  • home ownership
  • supported living
  • other options including staying in your current home, move-on schemes, living with another family, care or nursing homes
  • useful resources for families and people with learning disabilities.
