Staff areas for Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Teachers to consider their knowledge in relation to the following, to identify areas for continuing professional development:

  •  Are aware of the sensory needs of young people in their classes
  •  Have knowledge about the sensory needs of young people in their classes and the implications for learning 
  • Feel confident in meeting the sensory needs of the young people in their class 
  • Are able to discuss sensory concerns with the SENCo and/or the senior leadership team when required
  • Are familiar with the Individual Healthcare plans of the young people they teach and know what to do if there is a concern 
  • Have adapted the classroom so that the physical layout and sensory environment is not a barrier to learning 
  •  Give young people alternative strategies to record if required
  •  Give the young people in their classes enough time to respond 
  •  Can modify their responses to individual young people on the basis of need
  •  Work as part of a team with any teaching assistants they have in their classroom 
  •  Have access to CPD opportunities and other support to meet the  needs of young people with visual impairment
