Staff areas for Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Teachers to consider their knowledge in relation to the following, to identify areas for continuing professional development:
- Are aware of the sensory needs of young people in their classes
- Have knowledge about the sensory needs of young people in their classes and the implications for learning
- Feel confident in meeting the sensory needs of the young people in their class
- Are able to discuss sensory concerns with the SENCo and/or the senior leadership team when required
- Are familiar with the Individual Healthcare plans of the young people they teach and know what to do if there is a concern
- Have adapted the classroom so that the physical layout and sensory environment is not a barrier to learning
- Give young people alternative strategies to record if required
- Give the young people in their classes enough time to respond
- Can modify their responses to individual young people on the basis of need
- Work as part of a team with any teaching assistants they have in their classroom
- Have access to CPD opportunities and other support to meet the needs of young people with visual impairment
