Wildflower verge responsibilities and costs
Who is reponsible for carrying out a risk assessment on the wildflower verge site?
Applicants are responsible for ensuring a risk assessment is submitted with the application. If the applicant is a parish, town, district or borough council applying on behalf of a local interest groups, individual or organisation, the risk assessment can be carried out by either the applicant or the relevant local interest group, individual, or organisation.
Who needs to take out/provide evidence of a Public and Employers' Liability insurance policy?
If the applicant is applying directly, the policy must be in the name of the parish, town, district or borough council.
If the applicant is applying on behalf of local interest groups, individuals, or organisations, the insurance cover can either be provided by the applicant or by the local interest group, individual, or organisation on whose behalf the application is being made. Where the local interest group, individual, or organisation is providing the insurance cover, we will accept evidence of a quote at application stage. However, a full copy of the policy and certificate of insurance must be provided before final consent can be given for the wildflower verge scheme to go ahead.
Who will be responsible for maintaining the wildflower area and mowing the surrounding verge?
The applicant will be fully responsible for maintaining and mowing the wildflower area and verges surrounding it. We will not be able to continue to undertake the meter swathe cut around the verge. The Community Engagement Scheme is a buy-in process, whereby the applicant and where applicable, local interest group, individual, or organisation, is adopting the responsibility for maintaining the verge as a wildflower area. One of the terms and conditions of the scheme is that the area is fully maintained by the applicant/local interest group, individual, or organisation.

We must check and approve the proposed wildflower species mix. Please contact us by e-mail at wbrc@warwickshire.gov.uk to ensure it is appropriate for the proposed location.

The cost of the wildflower seed must be met by the applicant. If the applicant is applying on behalf of a local interest group, individual, or organisation, the costs of the seeds can be met by either the applicant or the local interest group, individual or organisation involved. It is up to the applicant to agree the terms on which they will make the application and who will meet these costs.
