Bridge details and location

Castle Bridge

Castle Bridge carries the A425 Banbury Road over the river Avon, 400m east of Warwick Castle. It is located adjacent to St Nicholas Park. A425 Banbury Road is one of the key traffic routes in Warwick town centre.

Castle Bridge is a single span structure which consists of an ashlar sandstone arch with rustications to the arch and continuing to the soffit. The bridge has curved ends and is surmounted by sandstone balustrades with classically carved balusters. The structure is statutorily listed grade II* (List entry number 1184083) and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (List entry number 1002987).

In 1788 the Earl of Warwick obtained an Act of Parliament which enabled him to build a new bridge. The first stone was laid in 1789 and the new bridge was opened in 1793. A model of the new bridge was made in 1788 by David and William Saunders who also provided piles and other timber work for it.
