Further information
What will these works achieve?
These repair and restoration works will maintain the highway structure’s function for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. It will also increase the strength and service life of the structure and safeguard this valuable and historic structure in line with its Scheduled Ancient Monument status.
How long will the bridgeworks take?
The bridge works are anticipated to take approximately eight months.
Will the road and footpath be closed during the maintenance works programme?
Temporary off-peak lane closures will be required at the start and end of the programme, to safely install access scaffolds on the sides of the bridge. One scaffold will be installed at a time, so there will also be a period in summer 2024 when lane closures are needed to move the scaffold to the other from the west to the east side of the bridge. Once the scaffold is in position, the temporary lane closures will be removed, and two-way traffic can continue past the works.
While the scaffold is in place, it will partly obstruct the footway, so a pedestrian crossing facility will be provided to safely divert pedestrians onto the other footway.
