Stratford Road / Shakespeare Avenue cycling scheme, Warwick

Background

We are developing a new cycle route on the A429 Stratford Road and Shakespeare Avenue in Warwick, to provide a connection between the existing cycle routes on Stratford Road and Hampton Road.

The proposed scheme is part of our programme of new cycle route development to make it easier for people to cycle for short local journeys, helping to tackle congestion, improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions and support physical activity.

The Stratford Rd / Shakespeare Avenue cycling scheme is one of a package of new cycling schemes being developed with funding from the County Council and the Getting Building Fund through the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

Scheme description

The proposed scheme will extend the existing shared use footway / cycleway on Stratford Rd a further 300 metres to the north, to the puffin crossing near Shakespeare Avenue. The puffin will be converted to a ‘toucan’ crossing, which can be used by both cyclists and pedestrians, to provide a safe crossing over Stratford Road to Shakespeare Avenue.

On Shakespeare Avenue itself, the proposal will involve widening the footway on the southern side of the road to a minimum of 3 metres, to provide an unsegregated shared use footway / cycleway. We initially investigated an alternative option to provide a separate cycle track adjacent to the existing footway on Shakespeare Avenue. However, this option was not progressed further, largely because it would require the removal of most of the trees and the verge on the southern side of the road.

You can view further details of the scheme on the plans below.

The closing date for submissions was 2 July 2021. We will review all your comments and consider any appropriate changes as part of the detailed design process. Project updates will be made available on this web page.
